Why we started NYSABA Parent & Family

We all love our children.  We love them fiercely.  We love them from their little heads to their little toes.  It’s hard to know what to do when our child is diagnosed with a Developmental Disability.  Everyone tells us something different it seems.  We may hear about ABA.  But we may have trouble accessing a program, we may think it’s a lot of work, or we may have heard mixed reviews.  Yes, ABA is a lot of work.  It means a consistent response, a thoughtful approach, and constant communication with our child’s team.  It means on a tired day, in a tired moment, we may have to do something that makes us feel a little more exhausted.  But it means so much more than that.  It means HOPE.  It means a strategy for when your child doesn’t sleep through the night.  It means a plan for learning to make friends.  It means an approach to eating more foods.  It means thoughtful ideas for ending challenging behaviors.  It means a well thought out plan for communication.

I want this for my child.  I want this for your child too.  We need trained ABA professionals and professionals need us.  We need their expertise and they need our commitment   So NYSABA Parent, Family and Advocate is a bridge that brings us together.  Together we can access information, identify resources and share stories that generate understanding.  It is also a medium for our kids, Autistic Individuals, or our consumers in general to have a voice.  We need to always know how we can do better!

I am passionate about the science of behavior analysis and how it can be meaningfully applied to problems of everyday life for people with a wide range of disabilities, and for those without disabilities, too.  Going to conferences and reading journals to stay up-to-date, conducting my own research and writing papers, teaching graduate students, and giving presentations and workshops are all fun and engaging for me, and I am reminded every time I do those things how lucky I am to do what I love.  But by far, the greatest privilege is being able to meet and sometimes work with amazing families and incredible kids.  As a parent who loves my child just as fiercely as you love yours, I understand what a great deal of trust you place in me or any other professional who comes into contact with your family.  One of the reasons that I volunteer my time to work with NYSABA and why I was so thrilled with the idea to create NYSABA Parent and Family is because I think that trust needs to be earned, and it’s extremely important to me to create a public face for behavior analysis that is accurate, helpful, and positive.  My goal is to provide families with useful information that will help them to navigate their children’s journeys towards being as independent and personally fulfilled as possible, as easily, efficiently, and effectively as possible.

NYSABA New York State Association for Behavior Analysis, Inc.
NYSABA is an organization dedicated to the promotion of behavior analysis in the State of New York. It offers information on legislation, opportunities to connect with other professionals, workshops, and conferences. While NYSABA is an organization that is tailored to the professional, we encourage parents to take advantage of the up-to-date information it provides to its members.

NYSABA Parent, Family and Advocate is an affiliate of NYSABA.  It is dedicated both to the promotion of ABA and to providing support to families and consumers.  We aim to provide information, connect families and professionals, and offer inspiration through family stories and pictures.  We are the link between the journey of a family and the support of professionals.
