Live :: Words to live by from other parents
"We are not superhuman"
"celebrate everyday success"
"Guilt won’t help you so let it go if you can"
"Early Intervention Works"
"Take a break for yourself whenever possible"
"Don’t sweat the small stuff"
People can’t understand what they are not living themselves. So try to forgive those that love you but do not understand.
Behavior Plans can be hard. Allow yourself to complain and to be tired. If the dishes don’t get done right away that’s ok.
Respite. Respite. Respite. Get some and use it whenever you can.
Be honest with yourself about what you can and cannot do. If you take on too much you won’t be successful.
Once you start a new program try to follow through. It is so much harder to get things accomplished if you don’t. Following through is really a favor to yourself in the end. If you don’t have the steam to follow through with something just give yourself a break and wait to start that program.
Don’t start a new communication device without first making sure your child has the skills to be successful. If your child has to navigate through a dozen screens to get to the category he needs, then is (s)he even going to remember the word by then? Our kids want to communicate so badly. Make sure we don’t tease them with a device or a teaching strategy that is not well planned.
